June 12, 2005—Under cool June skies, 21-year old Sal Bautista blasted the former Valley Crest Half Marathon course record by 3-minutes, 45 seconds to win the race in a time of 1:16:27! The rest of the field was a full 7-minutes behind him. The only contender to keep up with Sal was young Damian Mendoza, running in his 4th VCHM. Unfortunately Damian pulled up lame at mile 7 of the race.
The ladies' contest was much closer, with 23-year old Nevada resident Rhonda Kilfoyle eventually pulling off a 4-second victory over second place runner Rebecca Gallivan.
Eight new course records were established this year, with the females being most impressive… Jenny Zavala improved the old course record for 19 and under by over 39-minutes; Rhonda Kilfoyle bettered the 20-24 record by 27-minutes and Alfreda Iglehart improved the existing 55-59 record by more than 18-minutes!
Especially noteworthy were the top three 50-54 year-olds Arturo Martinez, David Louks and Paul Nicholson, who each beat the former age division record of 1:34:55!
